Proposed Stricter Gambling Regulations in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is currently contemplating the introduction of more stringent regulations on online gambling. Among the most significant measures under consideration is a complete prohibition on advertisements and bonuses related to internet gaming.
Details of the Proposed Measures
As part of the new legislative proposals put forward by Justice and Security State Secretary Claudia van Bruggen, there is a focus on banning all forms of online gambling advertisements and promotional bonuses. Additionally, the plans include tougher rules on deposit limits, improved affordability checks to prevent excessive spending, and broader powers to combat illegal gambling activities operating outside the licensed market.
The proposed restrictions aim to address the rising concerns regarding gambling-related harm, especially among younger demographics, since the market was re-regulated. Experts believe that removing ads and incentives could play a crucial role in mitigating some of these issues.
The government is also considering reforms to self-exclusion protocols. Under the new approach, voluntary self-exclusions would persist beyond their initial time frame until the individual actively decides to lift them. There is also a suggestion to allow family members to initiate self-exclusion requests on behalf of their loved ones.
Another key proposal involves granting regulators the authority to block access to unlicensed gambling websites to protect players further.
These proposals are currently in the development phase and will be drafted into a bill for future discussion and approval.
Current Stringent Gambling Regulations in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is recognized for having one of the most rigorous regulatory frameworks for gambling within Europe. The country has already implemented bans on untargeted gambling advertisements to protect consumers from potential harm, including restrictions on sports sponsorships linked to gambling firms.
Furthermore, advertising rules prohibit the use of celebrities or figures that may appeal to minors or younger audiences, aiming to prevent early gambling habits among youth.
However, some critics argue that these extensive regulations may be too restrictive, potentially undermining the competitiveness of legal operators and unintentionally strengthening the black market.
While efforts to block unauthorized operators may help address illegal gambling, there are concerns about the impact of recent tax increases that have strained the sector. The Dutch Lottery has called on lawmakers to oppose any further gambling tax hikes to avoid additional harm to the industry.
