Alberta Sets Stage for Launch of Regulated Online Gambling Market with 32 Operators

Alberta to Launch Regulated Online Gambling Market in July 2026
Alberta is preparing to introduce its regulated online gambling market on July 13, 2026. This launch marks a major change in how gambling activities will be managed in the Canadian province, offering a legal framework for private operators to engage in online betting.
Significant Interest from Industry Operators
Before the market even opens, 32 different operator groups have applied to participate, with 20 of these already fulfilling the financial requirements by paying a $150,000 deposit. Notable companies such as DraftKings plan to provide a variety of offerings, including sports betting and online casino games. The launch is strategically timed to align with the FIFA World Cup being held across North America, which is expected to boost betting activity.
Commitment to Responsible Gambling and Player Safety
Dale Nally, Service Alberta Minister, highlighted the encouraging level of interest from reputable companies ready to operate under stricter regulatory standards. The government’s updated legislation aims to ensure that service providers prioritize player safety and comply with responsible gambling practices.
New Advertising Rules to Promote Responsible Play
The new regulations include stricter advertising policies. Marketing efforts must avoid targeting minors, and current professional athletes will be prohibited from endorsing gambling products. However, campaigns promoting responsible gambling may feature former athletes.
Tackling the Grey Market and Ensuring Safeguards
The regulations also aim to address Alberta’s existing sizeable unregulated or “grey market” sector, which is estimated to represent around 70% of online gambling activity in the province. Although taxation of operators will generate revenue, the primary focus remains on enforcing safeguards to protect players from potential harms associated with online gambling.
Looking Ahead: Alberta’s Position in Canada’s Online Gambling Landscape
If all proceeds as planned, Alberta will become the second Canadian province to introduce a regulated online gambling system, following Ontario’s lead, which implemented a similar model in 2022.
