Decline in Passenger Traffic at Harry Reid International Airport

Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport experienced a significant decrease in passenger traffic in May, with an 8.6% drop compared to the same month last year. Approximately 4.5 million travelers passed through the airport, down from nearly 5 million in May of the previous year. Both domestic and international travel contributed to this decline, with domestic passengers falling by over 8% and international travelers decreasing by 5.7%.

Year-to-Date Passenger Trends and Industry Implications

In the first five months of the year, the airport handled around 21.5 million passengers, reflecting a 6.2% decrease or about 1.4 million fewer travelers than the same period last year. Passenger flow at the airport is a crucial measure of the overall health of Las Vegas’s tourism sector, so this downturn raises concerns about the city’s tourist outlook, especially following an earlier reported drop in visitor numbers for 2025.

Impact of Airline Changes on Passenger Numbers

The reduction in traffic was partly affected by the shutdown of Spirit Airlines’ operations at the airport as of May 2. Last year, Spirit Airlines carried over half a million passengers through Harry Reid in May, but this year the number plummeted to just under 4,000. Additionally, Southwest Airlines, the leading carrier at the airport by passenger volume, saw a slight decline of 0.4%, serving just over 1.95 million travelers during the month.

Casino Revenue Shows Resilience Amidst Visitor Decline

Despite the drop in air passenger traffic, Las Vegas casino revenues have remained strong. The Las Vegas Strip’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) increased by nearly 7% in April, with total earnings surpassing $2.9 billion in the first four months of the year—an increase of 1.9% compared to last year. Expectations for May’s GGR remain positive, although the extent of growth will depend heavily on baccarat game performance, as April’s results benefited from an unusually high VIP baccarat hold.

Alternative Visitor Channels and Economic Factors

Visitor counts by means other than air travel, such as those arriving by car, might offset some of the decline. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) plans to release updated figures soon, including data on visitor numbers, convention attendance, and road traffic along Interstates 15 and 11. However, higher gasoline prices—exceeding $6 per gallon in Southern California due to geopolitical tensions—are likely to suppress drive-in tourism, which has traditionally been a reliable source of visitors.

Community Support Initiatives

In community news, Sands Corporation recently donated $300,000 to the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, enhancing its ongoing collaboration with the organization focused on helping vulnerable young people in the state.
