Thailand’s Efforts to Combat Illegal Gambling Amid World Cup Excitement
The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) in Thailand has intensified its efforts to shut down illegal sports betting platforms as the 2026 FIFA World Cup captures global attention. Recent figures reveal that thousands of unauthorized gambling websites were blocked within the initial half of June.
Blocking Thousands of Unauthorized URLs
Between June 1 and June 18, the MDES announced that it successfully disabled approximately 13,888 illicit gambling URLs. The crackdown extended beyond just gambling websites, encompassing social media accounts that were involved in promoting illegal betting activities.
This initiative comes under the direction of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul in response to the surge of betting activity during the World Cup, a tournament known for attracting substantial gambling interest. With the event running from June 11 to July 19, the ministry remains alert to ongoing illegal operations.
Deputy Minister Bunthida Somchai highlighted that the ministry employed artificial intelligence tools to effectively identify and analyze unlawful sites. This technology enhanced their capability to disrupt the underground betting market significantly. Additionally, the deputy minister urged the public to avoid sharing or engaging with content linked to illicit gambling.

Thailand’s vigilance mirrors a worldwide pattern where regulators and authorized betting companies brace for intensified illegal gambling during prominent tournaments like the World Cup.
