End of an Era for Free Parking at MGM National Harbor

For almost a decade, MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill has stood out among local casinos by offering complimentary parking to its visitors. Known for its luxurious atmosphere, fine dining, and exciting entertainment, the resort has made free parking a key part of its appeal. However, this benefit is set to end soon.

Starting July 13, 2026, guests who are not members of the casino’s loyalty program will be required to pay $15 for self-parking in the resort’s garage. This upcoming change has sparked widespread discussion and varying opinions among patrons.

Impact on Visitors: Protecting or Burdening Guests?

The parking fee will not apply to members of MGM Rewards, the free loyalty program, who will continue to enjoy free parking for themselves and one guest. Regular visitors are divided about the new policy.

Some believe the introduction of a parking charge may help deter non-serious visitors from occupying parking spaces meant for actual casino guests. On the other hand, many feel that adding this fee creates an additional financial strain for those already spending money on gaming, dining, entertainment, or accommodations.

Concerns have also been raised that the new fee might push visitors toward competing casinos. For instance, Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland, MGM National Harbor’s main competitor, continues to offer free garage and surface parking, potentially making it a more enticing option.

Timing and Reasoning Behind the Decision

The timing of the parking fee introduction has attracted attention, as it follows two fatal shootings in the casino’s parking garage over the past two years, including a deadly road rage incident in late June. Despite this, MGM insists the decision was made well before these incidents and is unrelated to security issues.

The casino stated the change aims to ensure parking availability for guests due to increased demand driven by nearby developments. One significant upcoming project is the Sphere National Harbor, a 6,000-seat immersive entertainment venue backed by Madison Square Garden Entertainment. Expected to begin construction in early 2027, it is projected to draw millions of visitors annually, further increasing parking demand around the resort.
