Contarino was known to be an enthusiastic hiker. On June 19, she was seen spending time at Lone Mountain and was caught on surveillance returning to the Bungalows Hostel where she was staying. Residents have mentioned that Boulder Highway has a reputation for high crime, particularly at night, due to prevalent drug and prostitution activities in the area.
The following day, June 20, Contarino had breakfast at a nearby café before setting out for a hiking excursion at Mount Charleston National Park. She was seen disembarking from her bus and entering the park. However, she never returned to her hostel, and her bus ticket to Los Angeles for connecting to her flight home remained unused.
