The Dutch Gambling Authority, known as Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has initiated a campaign targeting young sports enthusiasts to educate them about the potential dangers of excessive sports betting. This effort, titled “Don’t Let Yourself Get Lost in the Game,” is timed to coincide with the excitement surrounding the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Understanding the Campaign’s Message
The central message of the campaign is to encourage bettors to stay mindful and avoid losing control while engaging in sports betting activities. The KSA highlights that major sports events, particularly the FIFA World Cup, often lead to a surge in betting activities. Young adults, who make up a large portion of fans during these events, are particularly vulnerable due to their tendency to underestimate the risks involved and not recognize sports betting as gambling.
Creative Outreach and Personal Stories
To reinforce its message, the KSA collaborated with street artists Kamp Seedorf to create a mural in Amsterdam featuring Glenn Helder, a former Dutch national soccer player. Helder has openly shared his struggles with gambling addiction, including a suicide attempt, to illustrate the severe consequences problem gambling can have.
Adding a personal touch, soccer professional and influencer Noah Zeeuw conducted an interview with Helder at the mural location, allowing him to share his experiences with a newer generation of fans. Zeeuw will also continue to produce content throughout the World Cup, discussing the dangers of unchecked betting via his social media platforms.
Additionally, the campaign promotes an online portal where bettors can exchange information and support each other in managing gaming habits responsibly.
Educating Young Players on Gambling Risks
Michel Groothuizen, chair of the KSA, emphasized the importance of informing young adults about gambling risks, especially during key sporting events that generate heavy betting activity. He noted that many young people face pressures that can influence their betting behavior, such as peer influence and overconfidence in winning.
He stated that the campaign is designed not to preach but to offer clear insights that help young bettors make well-informed decisions.
Glenn Helder expressed that while soccer should remain an enjoyable sport, gambling can jeopardize far more than just money. He urged young people to avoid losing themselves in the habit, sharing his own journey of recovery.
Soccer pro Noah Zeeuw pointed out that many young fans mistakenly see betting as a minor or natural part of sports. He believes education through engaging and relatable stories is the key to raising awareness about the real risks involved.
