Indonesia Blocks 3.7 Million Gambling Websites in Two Years, Efforts Continue

Massive Crackdown on Illegal Gambling Websites
Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications and Digital has reported significant progress in its fight against illegal online gambling. Since October 2024, authorities have successfully blocked 3.7 million gambling-related websites, including affiliates, sportsbooks, and casino platforms. Alongside this, over 38,000 bank accounts linked to these operations have been suspended.
Government and Public Collaboration in Enforcement
The data was announced by Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid during the OJ Banking Forum 2026, reflecting efforts up to July 12, 2026. Public involvement plays a crucial role in these actions, with more than 156,000 suspicious accounts being reported through a government-run platform designed to identify illegal gambling activities.
Challenges Despite Strict Prohibitions
Gambling is entirely illegal in Indonesia, and in addition to the gambling crackdown, approximately 85,500 mobile numbers have been suspected of involvement in scams unrelated to gambling. Despite stringent laws and enforcement, illegal gambling continues to be a persistent issue in the country.
Arrests and Financial Seizures Targeting Gambling Rings
Law enforcement agencies have intensified their efforts in 2026, arresting 1,164 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal gambling operations. These actions have resulted in the confiscation of assets valued at around $105 million.
Concerns Over Gambling Exposure Among Youth
In July, Indonesian authorities deported 92 Chinese nationals linked to an illegal gambling syndicate involved in scams and online gaming. A significant concern has been the exposure of children to online gambling, with the ministry reporting that at least 200,000 minors have encountered gambling-related content online.
