Betfred Temporarily Halts Services in Ireland

Betfred, a well-known betting operator, has announced a temporary suspension of its gaming services for customers in Ireland. This decision comes as the country prepares to implement new gambling licensing regulations.

Pause to Adjust to Upcoming Regulatory Changes

The company revealed that it would stop its operations starting June 30, just one day before Ireland’s new gambling rules become active. Customers in Ireland have been urged to withdraw their funds promptly, and to avoid placing bets that would settle after June 29. Notably, bets related to the World Cup are expected to be settled as usual.

Although Betfred has not set a date for resuming its services, it emphasized that this shutdown is temporary and necessary for aligning its operations with the new licensing requirements.

New Licensing Laws and Enhanced AML Policies in Ireland

Starting from July 1, Ireland will launch a revamped licensing framework under the Gambling Regulation Act 2024. The newly established Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) will oversee the gaming industry moving forward.

As part of this process, Irish authorities have introduced a comprehensive 30-point action plan aimed at addressing risks within the gaming sector. A key focus of this initiative is strengthening anti-money laundering (AML) controls.

Concerns have been raised regarding both online and land-based gaming environments. For land-based operators, the untraceability of cash transactions remains a significant challenge. On the other hand, the rapid pace of online payments brings its own set of risks.

Cryptocurrencies also present challenges, prompting GRAI to consider implementing industry-wide standards for digital assets to enhance oversight and security.

Overall, the GRAI is actively working to modernize Ireland’s gaming regulations and address shortcomings to ensure a safer gambling landscape.
