Mayweather Faces Charges in $200K Watch Buying Dispute

Mayweather Confronts Legal Issues Over $200,000 Watch Purchase
Floyd Mayweather Jr., the celebrated boxing champion, is currently under investigation in Nevada following allegations of using a check with insufficient funds to acquire a luxury watch.
Possible Extended Prison Term for Mayweather
According to court records, Mayweather, aged 49, is accused of buying an expensive timepiece from a Las Vegas reseller in late December 2024 with a payment of $200,000. Prosecutors report that the bank later declined the check due to inadequate funds, sparking a criminal probe that has led to two felony charges.
The charges include high-value theft and issuing a check with intent to defraud. Legal authorities claim that Mayweather was aware at the time of the transaction that the payment would not clear.
Mayweather did not attend the recent court hearing but was represented by his attorney. A court session has been scheduled for September, with proceedings expected to continue throughout the year.
If found guilty, Mayweather could face significant penalties under Nevada law, which allows for lengthy imprisonment for such offenses. The theft charge alone may result in up to 20 years behind bars, while the fraud charge carries potential prison time, fines, and restitution demands.
Luxury Watch Dispute Compounds Mayweather’s Financial Challenges
The conflict arises from the attempted purchase of a high-end Swiss watch, renowned for its quality and exclusive pricing. The store waited several months hoping to settle the matter out of court before escalating it to legal authorities.
The defense argues that this issue should be resolved as a civil matter, expressing confidence that the court will achieve a fair resolution. Conversely, the retailer claims they made numerous efforts to collect payment, leaving them no alternative but to pursue legal action.
This case adds to Mayweather’s existing financial and legal difficulties, including ongoing disputes involving unpaid debts and lawsuits from former partners and service providers. Despite amassing considerable wealth during his career, concerns about Mayweather’s financial management have surfaced in recent years.
Outside of legal matters, Mayweather remains active professionally. He is scheduled to participate in an exhibition boxing match in Athens later this month and has hinted at additional fights ahead.
