Australia Imposes Largest Fines on Illegal Online Poker Operation

Massive Penalties for Illegal Poker Ring
Australia has imposed one of the most substantial fines ever seen in the country against an unlawful online poker enterprise. These unprecedented sanctions mark a significant move to tackle illicit gambling activities.
Details of the Court Ruling
The Federal Court of Australia recently penalized an illegal poker network operating across three separate websites. This legal judgment resulted in fines totaling AUD 24.2 million, equivalent to approximately $16.7 million USD.
The court’s order targeted Brisbane Poker, the company managing the poker brands PPPfish, Redraw Poker, and Shuffle Gaming. The company was fined AUD 15 million (about $10.4 million USD). Additionally, the director of Brisbane Poker, Rhys Edward Jones, received a personal fine of AUD 9 million (around $6.2 million USD).
Another individual, gambling affiliate Brenton Lee Buttigieg, was fined AUD 240,000 (approximately $166,000 USD) for his role in promoting the unlicensed poker sites. Buttigieg admitted involvement prior to the imposition of penalties. Beyond the fines, both Brisbane Poker and Jones have been instructed to bear the legal costs stemming from the case.
The Strict Australian Stance on Online Gambling
Australia maintains a rigorous ban on online gambling, forbidding unlicensed operations from servicing its residents. Despite this prohibition, the illegal poker group actively targeted Australian players.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) investigated for several years before concluding that the poker platforms allowed users to purchase virtual chips that could later be converted into real money. This practice is a clear violation of the Interactive Gaming Act.
Legal action against the operation was initiated by ACMA in April 2022. The regulator argued that even though the sites did not permit direct wagering with money, the chip purchase and redemption scheme constituted illegal gambling activities.
The ACMA continues to lead crackdowns on offshore illegal gambling by blocking thousands of unauthorized gambling websites and affiliates. The recent fines further demonstrate Australia’s unwavering zero-tolerance policy toward illegal online gambling.
