Arkansas Firefighters’ Union President Arrested for Alleged Embezzlement and Gambling

Union President Accused of Stealing Funds for Gambling
The leader of a firefighters’ union in Arkansas has been arrested following allegations that he misappropriated funds from the organization and used the money to gamble. This serious charge has put the union and its members under scrutiny.
Suspicion Arises Among Union Members
According to official documents, Sharone Norwood, who serves as the president of the Fort Smith chapter of the International Association of Fire Fighters, is accused of stealing approximately $50,000 from union funds. It is claimed that he funneled this stolen money into gambling activities at a nearby tribal casino.
Investigations revealed that between August and September 2025, Norwood made several unauthorized withdrawals from the union’s bank account. These irregularities were eventually spotted by other union officials. Since only Norwood and the union’s treasurer had withdrawal access, the members became concerned and reported the situation to law enforcement in April 2026.
Union treasurer Samuel Schleiff also observed a $20,000 deposit made shortly after he raised concerns about the missing funds with Norwood.
Evidence and Legal Proceedings
Authorities gathered evidence, including surveillance footage, suggesting Norwood was responsible for the missing money. They tracked his transactions and confirmed that his visits to Choctaw Casino & Resort Pocola coincided with the dates he withdrew funds from the union account, strengthening the case against him.
Reports indicate that Norwood confessed to a battalion chief of having a gambling problem and admitting to taking the funds. Despite this, Norwood pleaded not guilty when faced with formal charges on May 19.
Following his arrest, Norwood was released on bail. If found guilty, he could face penalties including a fine up to $15,000 and a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
It is also worth noting that Norwood has been involved in previous legal issues related to unpaid debts.
