Australian Gambler-Turned-Sportsbook-Mogul Faces Criticism Over Betting Practices

A Former Gambler’s Fight Against Irresponsible Betting
Winton Veall, once a dissatisfied bettor, challenged a sportsbook for allowing him to place bets while intoxicated, leading to considerable losses. Having previously been a player upset by insufficient protections against reckless gambling, Veall’s journey took a dramatic turn as he transitioned from a gambler to an owner of multiple betting websites.
Legal Battle Over Intoxicated Wagers
About four years ago, Veall took legal action against TopSport, a sportsbook that permitted him to gamble under the influence of alcohol. Between 2016 and 2019, he made numerous bets during such times, including a session where he wagered AUD 406,000 in just two hours. These experiences resulted in significant financial loss and emotional distress for Veall. The dispute was resolved through an out-of-court settlement, and details about any compensation remain undisclosed.
Veall’s Evolution into a Betting Industry Leader
Since that time, Veall has become a key figure in the sports betting industry, holding ownership or directorial roles in several online sportsbooks based in New South Wales. These include platforms such as BetNova, BetNow, DashBet, MidasBet, OnlyBets, and PuntZone.
Controversies Around Restrictive Betting Conditions
Ironically, Veall’s companies have recently come under scrutiny for practices some customers consider limiting or unfair. One notable case involved a horse racing enthusiast placing a bet with BetNow. The bettor expected to receive nearly AUD 2,600 but was only paid AUD 2,000, due to a rule capping payouts at that amount. Further complicating the situation, the winner’s account was reportedly frozen and subjected to verification checks after the payout.
The issue was eventually resolved with BetNow agreeing to pay the additional amount owed, despite the payout limits. This has sparked discussions about the transparency and fairness of the policies implemented by these platforms.
Customer Feedback and Veall’s Response
While some reviews of Veall’s betting sites have been critical, particularly regarding payout restrictions and account holds, there are also reports praising the quality of customer support these businesses provide. In response to criticism, Veall has stated that he is not aware of any significant issues experienced by customers across his companies.
This mixed situation suggests that while some bettors have encountered problems, others have had positive experiences, indicating a complex landscape within Veall’s expanding sportsbook ventures.
