Significant Increase in GamStop Registrations in Early 2026

GamStop, the UK’s official online self-exclusion program, has experienced a 16% rise in registrations related to problem gambling during the first half of 2026. This reflects growing awareness and use of the service designed to help individuals control their gambling habits.

More Young People Are Choosing Self-Exclusion

The surge in registrations is particularly notable among younger individuals, with those under 25 showing a 26% increase compared to the previous year. Younger registrants tend to opt for shorter exclusion periods, though 38% still choose to commit to a minimum of six months away from gambling. Overall, half of the total 614,738 users on GamStop have selected a five-year ban to support their recovery.

Men make up the majority of new sign-ups, accounting for about 70% of registrations. May 2026 saw a record-breaking number of new users, with 12,236 people joining the scheme.

Industry Collaboration and Flexible Support Tools Remain Key

Fiona Palmer, CEO of GamStop Group, emphasized that the consistent year-on-year growth in registrations demonstrates the program’s value as a flexible and effective tool, especially for younger consumers. Despite ongoing changes in the gambling landscape, GamStop continues to work collaboratively across the sector, prioritizing a combination of tools and support systems to aid those affected by gambling-related harm.

Potential Impact of the World Cup on Gambling Behaviors

Matt Burgiss, Head of External Affairs at GamStop Group, highlighted concerns about increased gambling activity tied to major events like the World Cup. He noted the risk of individuals engaging more frequently in high-risk gambling activities such as online casinos during the tournament period.

Self-exclusion serves as an important preventative measure, offering players a chance to pause and reassess their gambling habits before any related harm progresses. Burgiss shared from his personal experience the importance of recognizing when gambling starts to escalate and affect both the individual and those around them.
