Massachusetts Gaming Commission Issues Fine to MGM Springfield

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has levied a $25,000 fine against MGM Springfield, a local sports betting and gaming operator. This action follows the acceptance of wagers on a Northeastern University college baseball game held in April 2025, which is against state regulations.

Details of the Fine and Legal Restrictions

The betting market was available for only a brief duration of two hours. However, the MGC commissioners unanimously agreed on a 5-0 vote to impose the penalty, emphasizing the seriousness of the violation. In Massachusetts, placing bets on collegiate sports teams is prohibited unless the games are part of national tournaments.

Additional Penalty for BetMGM App

During the same MGC meeting, another fine was approved, this time against BetMGM, the mobile sports betting application linked to MGM. The $7,000 penalty was due to accepting bets on boxing matches held in Saudi Arabia earlier in 2025. These wagers amounted to 79 individual bets with a total stake exceeding $1,000.
