Illegal Betting Ads Go Unnoticed by Most Users in the UK

Many UK Adults Struggle to Identify Illegal Betting Advertisements
With the 2026 World Cup attracting widespread attention, recent data reveals that a significant portion of adults in the UK find it difficult to distinguish between licensed gambling adverts and those from unregulated sources online. This raises concerns about the exposure of millions of viewers to potentially unsafe betting services amid the surge in online gambling activity.
Study Highlights Lack of Awareness on Illegal Betting Promotions
A survey involving over 2,000 adults, commissioned by Entain—the company behind Ladbrokes and Coral—found that more than 75% of participants struggle to tell if gambling ads on social media come from legitimate providers. Confidence in recognizing licensed operators remains low, indicating a widespread lack of awareness.
Although most respondents said they would steer clear of unlicensed betting sites if they could identify them, the research shows their confidence in doing so does not match reality. This situation leaves many consumers vulnerable to deceptive offers, as illegal operators typically lack fundamental safeguards such as proper identity verification, dispute resolution mechanisms, and assurances that winnings will be paid out.
There is also a general mistrust in current regulatory measures. Few respondents feel current laws are effective against illegal gambling, and roughly one-third believe authorities are not doing enough to protect consumers. Social media platforms are frequently cited as key channels through which illegal betting advertisements spread, especially during major sporting events.
Entain Launches Educational Campaign to Combat Illegal Betting Risks
As the World Cup progresses, experts warn that illicit operators are intensifying their marketing efforts. These often involve influencers and informal networks to rapidly reach large numbers of people, complicating efforts to verify ad legitimacy.
In response, Entain has initiated an awareness campaign featuring the online personality known as “Big John”. This campaign aims to educate the public about the dangers of illegal gambling using engaging and easy-to-understand content. The series includes short highlights from tournaments that explain how to differentiate between licensed and unlicensed platforms, focusing on misleading bonuses and the lack of consumer protections on illegal sites.
The campaign provides practical guidance on identifying legitimate operators, encouraging viewers to check licensing status and ensure that platforms offer responsible gambling tools and secure payment methods.
An Entain senior executive emphasized the gap between what users believe they see online and what they can actually identify. They noted that regulated gambling markets offer crucial protections, whereas unregulated options expose individuals to fraud and increased risks.
