Influencer Charged in Hong Kong Over Online Gambling Promotion

A 29-year-old social media influencer and adult film actress from Hong Kong has been formally charged for allegedly endorsing an offshore online gambling platform through her online channels. This incident underscores Hong Kong’s strict regulations against gambling-related activities.

Legal Consequences of Gambling Promotion

Hong Kong law prohibits all forms of gambling except those conducted by authorized organizations, with online casino games specifically outlawed. Unlike its neighbor Macau, which operates a legal casino industry, Hong Kong criminalizes offshore platforms targeting its residents.

Authorities from the West Kowloon District accuse the influencer, identified by her surname So, of promoting a foreign betting site offering various gambling services such as sports betting, slot machines, table games, live dealer options, and esports wagering. The platform reportedly markets heavily to Asian users and positions itself as a leading online gambling brand.

According to court documents, So faces charges for promoting or facilitating bookmaking, an offense punishable by up to seven years imprisonment and fines reaching HKD 5 million (approximately $638,000). She was granted bail after her initial court hearing.

Claims of Unawareness and Legal Defense

Her defense lawyers argue that she believed the gambling operation to be lawful and maintain that the platform did not accept bets from Hong Kong residents. They deny that she knowingly engaged in illegal activities.

Prosecutors contend that So began her promotional activities only recently, acting as a marketing representative for the gambling site on her social media platforms. They further highlight that the platform has been advertising extensively around major international sports events, including upcoming football competitions, aiming to attract bettors globally.

Broader Context and Regulatory Warnings

This case forms part of a wider crackdown on offshore gambling operators that target Asian markets through influencer marketing and digital advertisements. Hong Kong authorities have consistently warned that promoting or facilitating access to offshore gambling services is a violation of local laws, irrespective of where the operator is based.
