A Chicago Man’s Struggle with Gambling Addiction

Dane Miller, a 32-year-old man from the Chicago area, had dreams of building a secure future with his fiancé. However, those hopes were shattered as he fell into a severe gambling addiction that consumed his life savings. Instead of preparing for their wedding and future, his funds were steadily drained by online sports betting.

The Descent into Gambling Addiction

What started as occasional betting during the early stages of the pandemic quickly escalated into a much darker problem. After joining the DraftKings sportsbook platform, Miller was granted VIP status, which led to a continuous flow of incentives aimed at encouraging increased wagers. These perks, according to the lawsuit, contributed to worsening his gambling behavior.

Miller began using money he had saved for his wedding but soon resorted to credit cards, personal loans, and even dipping into his retirement savings to sustain his betting. His employer noticed troubling signs and ultimately terminated his employment in 2024. Around this time, his family urged him to seek professional help for his addiction.

The Emotional Toll and Crisis

The situation deteriorated to a critical point later in 2024 when Miller experienced intense suicidal thoughts and was hospitalized after writing a suicide note. Disturbingly, even during this crisis, he continued receiving promotional offers from the betting platform, including bonus credits sent just before his hospitalization.

Recovery Efforts and Ongoing Challenges

Following a brief relapse after his hospital stay, Miller committed to a structured treatment program. By the end of 2024, he completed his rehabilitation and voluntarily added himself to Illinois’ self-exclusion list to avoid further gambling temptation. Since then, he has rebuilt his personal life by getting married, starting a family, and returning to work. Despite these positive steps, the lawsuit highlights the enduring financial, emotional, and psychological effects of his addiction.

Similar Past Legal Cases Involving DraftKings

This lawsuit bears resemblance to a prior case in New Jersey involving an individual known as Mdallo1990 who also faced significant losses due to gambling on DraftKings. Instead of providing help or intervening, the platform allegedly continued to send promotional offers, encouraging further play without verifying the gambler’s financial situation. That case concluded with a settlement.

Accusations Against DraftKings’ Practices

Miller’s legal team claims that DraftKings consciously targeted high-value players with personalized promotions, reinforcing gambling addiction behaviors. The complaint asserts that the platform maintained frequent contact and sent offers designed to keep Miller engaged despite his mounting losses. As of now, DraftKings has not released a public statement regarding this lawsuit.
