An Early Morning Incident at a Nottingham Casino
In the early hours of July 13, at around 3:20 am, a tense confrontation occurred outside a casino on Maid Marian Way in Nottingham.
A 19-year-old named Nadir Mokadeh became agitated after being denied entry by staff because he couldn’t verify his age. During this incident, he approached a security guard named Ismail Hamza, brandishing a knife from his waistband and demanding he step back.
Calm Negotiation Prevents Violence
Instead of reacting with hostility, the security guard remained composed and engaged the teenager in conversation. Despite the clear danger posed by the weapon, Hamza encouraged Nadir to lower the knife and peacefully resolve the situation.
At one point, Hamza managed to take possession of the young man’s phone and used it as leverage, promising to return it only when the knife was put away. This careful dialogue continued for nearly twenty minutes outside the casino, successfully preventing any physical altercation.
Police arrived and arrested Mokadeh without incident. During subsequent legal proceedings, although the teenager opted not to answer questions, he admitted to threatening someone publicly with a blade. Notably, this was his first offense.
Judicial Response Emphasizes Opportunity for Reform
Judge James Sampson acknowledged the gravity of the offense, highlighting that the teenager threatened a worker who was simply performing his duties. The continuous threatening behavior throughout the encounter was also noted.
However, the judge took into account Mokadeh’s youth and previously clean record, viewing the event as a serious but correctable error in judgment rather than a sign of an entrenched criminal path.
Mokadeh received a 14-month sentence in a young offenders facility, suspended for 21 months. His sentence included 15 hours of unpaid work, attendance at 15 rehabilitation sessions aimed at behavioral improvement, and a £150 contribution toward court costs.
The judge praised the doorman’s composed and steady approach, emphasizing that his intervention likely prevented the situation from escalating. Mokadeh’s defense highlighted his remorse and clean background as indicators that he is unlikely to encounter legal problems again.
