Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams and the family of Officer David Fahey thanked the community for their support of the department after Fahey was killed in the line of duty in January.

Fahey was putting down flares on Interstate 90 West to warn drivers of an accident ahead, when a driver struck him and fled the scene.

Thousands of cards and letters of support from around Northeast Ohio and across the country came to the department after the officer was killed.

"I want to thank all of those who sent condolences," said Williams.

Fahey's stepfather, a retired Cleveland police officer, his mother, a retired police officer and his brother, a current Cleveland police officer had tears in their eyes during the news conference.

Fahey's stepfather, Mark Ketterer, thanked those in the community who lined the streets during the funeral procession. It was especially touching to see the young children bundled up on the cold day.

"Just the respect they showed to this fallen officer was overwhelming to our family," said Ketterer.

Police arrested and charged 44-year-old Israel Alvarez, he faces several charges including aggravated vehicular homicide. He has plead not guilty.
