Nationwide Reports Rise in UK Betting Ahead of Major 2026 Sports Events

Betting on the Rise in the UK as Major Sports Events Approach in 2026
Recent banking data highlights a consistent increase in betting activities throughout the UK, with high-volume gamblers spending hundreds of pounds monthly as a busy sports calendar for 2026 approaches.
Majority Plan to Increase Betting in 2026
Data from Nationwide Building Society reveals that gambling payments from its customers rose by 9% in January compared to the previous year, accompanied by a 7% increase in the number of transactions.
Analysis from late last year indicates that the top 10% of gamblers by spending average around GBP 745 (approximately $992) each month.
This upward trend coincides with an eventful sports year in 2026. A survey of 2,000 bettors shows that over two-thirds intend to raise their bets in the coming months. Soccer is expected to be a driving factor, with events such as the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Champions League, Royal Ascot, as well as rugby and cricket tournaments, contributing to the heightened interest.
While many keep betting within limits, support services are experiencing higher demand. GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline recorded over 105,000 contacts in 2025. In January alone, referrals to formal treatment and peer support programs increased by 50% compared to the previous year.
Concerns Over Harmful Betting Habits
Survey results reveal some worrying behaviors linked to betting harm. A portion of respondents admit feeling compelled to continue betting after losses. Others report that gambling has negatively affected their relationships and financial situation. Notably, one in five people said they use betting to cover essential household bills.
Kathryn Townsend, Nationwide’s head of customer vulnerability, emphasized the potential impact of the busy sports schedule on vulnerable individuals. She stressed the importance of early intervention and highlighted the introduction of stronger protective measures in 2024, including account-level gambling blocks that enforce a 72-hour cooling-off period before removal. More than 10,000 such blocks are activated each month.
Despite these measures, awareness is uneven. Nearly 20% of surveyed customers were unaware that banks can limit gambling payments. Among those informed, about half have used these restrictions, with many finding them effective in controlling their spending.
Representatives from GamCare caution that gambling problems often remain hidden but can lead to serious emotional and financial hardships. They encourage anyone facing difficulties to seek assistance through bank safeguards, self-exclusion options, or by contacting the National Gambling Helpline.
