UK Betting and Gaming Council Donates $40K to Support Ex-Prisoner Employment Program Tempus Novo

Supporting Ex-Prisoners Through Employment
The United Kingdom’s Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has generously donated approximately $40,000 to Tempus Novo, a charitable organization dedicated to assisting former prisoners as they re-enter the workforce. This initiative has also gained backing from Labour MP Lee Pitcher of Doncaster East and Isle of Axholme, who highlighted the significant impact of the BGC’s support for this vital cause.
Tempus Novo’s Mission: Opening New Chapters
Derived from Latin meaning “New Time,” Tempus Novo focuses on helping individuals who have served prison sentences to build fresh starts by securing employment. Recognizing the hurdles ex-prisoners face when seeking stable jobs, the organization is committed to breaking the cycle of reoffending by providing the necessary support and opportunities for successful reintegration into society.
By enabling employment, Tempus Novo aims to reduce the likelihood that former inmates will revert to criminal behavior, emphasizing the transformative power of rehabilitation.
The BGC has acknowledged the importance of this work by allocating a grant of £30,000 (around $40,000) to help advance Tempus Novo’s mission.
Funding Source and Additional Beneficiaries
This contribution is part of over £450,000 raised by BGC members through the 2025 Britannia Stakes charity race held at Royal Ascot. Alongside Tempus Novo, funds were also distributed to organizations including Prostate Cancer UK and Missing People, among others.
Impact of the Donation on Tempus Novo’s Work
Steve Freer, CEO of Tempus Novo, expressed gratitude for the BGC’s support, noting that the funding will enable the charity to make a meaningful and lasting difference. With these resources, Tempus Novo plans to foster substantial changes within the criminal justice system that can prevent re-offending and create better outcomes for those affected.
He remarked that this support is crucial for reshaping rehabilitation efforts and offering hope to those seeking a fresh start.
“Thanks to this support, we’re witnessing lives transformed, futures rebuilt, and a real shift in the practical application of rehabilitation,” said Freer.
Community and Political Endorsements
Labour MP Lee Pitcher personally visited HMP Hatfield to observe Tempus Novo’s initiatives and praised the organization’s efforts. He emphasized the importance of partnerships like that between Tempus Novo and the BGC for providing hope and second chances to individuals striving to rebuild their lives.
“It’s incredibly important that charities such as Tempus Novo receive backing from organizations like the BGC. It brings hope and starts to change lives – everyone deserves a second chance,” stated Pitcher.
How Tempus Novo Operates
Established by two senior prison officers from HMP Leeds, Tempus Novo works closely with leading employers to match dedicated ex-prisoners with suitable job openings, helping break the cycle of crime. The charity provides ongoing support for at least a year to both the employees and their employers to ensure successful reintegration.
