Unexpected Million-Dollar Deposit in a Bank Account

Imagine the shock of logging into your bank account to find nearly nine million dollars deposited by mistake. This was the surprising reality for a TikTok user known as @shawnainchapterland, when Fidelity Investments erroneously transferred $8.7 million into her account.

Doing the Right Thing: Reporting the Error

In a time when living costs are rising and money feels tight, many joked they would keep the money if it landed in their bank by accident. However, Shawn did what was right and immediately contacted Fidelity to report the error—a decision she now refers to as her “biggest regret.” In a viral TikTok video, she remarked, “I could be watching this mess from a beach in the Seychelles right now.”

While it may sound like a dream come true, accidentally receiving such a large sum of money is complicated. According to the principle of unjust enrichment, funds transferred by mistake do not legally belong to the recipient.

The Legal Reality: Not a Lottery Win

Errors in transfers, whether due to brokerage mistakes, ACH transfers, or wires, are strictly regulated, allowing the sender to reclaim the entire amount. Although receiving millions out of the blue might feel like winning the lottery—sudden, unexpected, and life-changing—it is far from a prize you get to keep.

Spending money that was accidentally deposited can lead to severe consequences. These may include frozen bank accounts, lawsuits, wage garnishments, and even criminal charges if it appears the money was knowingly misused.

Lessons from a $8.75 Million Slot Win

Interestingly, four years prior, Twitch streamer Tyler Niknam, known as TrainwrecksTV, experienced a life-changing moment when he legitimately won $8.75 million on a single slot spin during a livestream in February 2022. His reaction was one of disbelief, repeatedly exclaiming, “Oh my god,” as the massive win displayed on his screen.

Despite the windfall, he cautioned his audience about the risks of gambling. He explained that even with his Bitcoin earnings and Twitch income, gambling is not sustainable or advisable for most people and warned viewers to be careful and not take unnecessary risks.
