The Star Sydney’s License Suspension Extended by NSW Independent Casino Commission

The Star Sydney License Suspension Continues
The Star Entertainment Group Limited announced that the license for its Sydney casino, The Star Sydney, remains suspended. The NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has decided that the casino is still not prepared to have its license reinstated.
Ongoing Issues Have Plagued The Star
The Star has been struggling since investigations revealed numerous serious compliance violations. The company has faced challenges in reforming its workplace culture and has found it difficult to fully execute the required remediation measures. These obstacles have caused a decline in both public confidence and shareholder trust, leading to financial pressures for the Australian casino operator.
Extension of License Suspension
According to an official filing with the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), the NICC has extended the suspension of The Star’s casino license, which is now set to remain in place until March 31, 2026, unless the commission decides to end the suspension sooner.
Commitment to Improvement and Compliance
Steve McCann, CEO and Managing Director of The Star Entertainment Group, expressed the company’s dedication to completing its remediation plan. He emphasized the importance of restoring safe and compliant operations as they work towards regaining their license.
McCann stated, “We recognize that there is still considerable work ahead of us, but we are steadfast in delivering our remediation plan to support the safe and compliant running of our business. The Star pledges to maintain an open and cooperative relationship with the Manager, the NICC, and the New South Wales Government, while proving to all stakeholders its suitability as a license holder as soon as possible.”
Legal Challenges Facing The Star
The Star is also dealing with legal issues. Chinese-born billionaire Phillip Dong Fang Lee has accused the casino of exploiting his limited English skills to mislead him into signing documents and gambling beyond his intentions. This case adds to the series of difficulties confronting the company.
Additionally, The Star was unable to secure covenant waiver agreements with its lenders, which has prevented the company from breaching the terms of its debt arrangements.
