New Leadership, New Policies on Gambling in Thailand

Thailand’s recently appointed prime minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, has clearly expressed his opposition to gambling activities. Immediately after his assumption of office on September 5, he made it known that any efforts to legalize casino resorts are being postponed indefinitely.

Comprehensive Ban on Poker Activities Enacted

Anutin has gone beyond just shelving casino legalization plans. He announced that the approval for such entertainment venues would require a change in government leadership. More significantly, he has moved to ban poker games, tournaments, and related events nationwide.

This ban affects not only the organizers of poker events but also the advertisers and promoters involved in supporting such activities. This is a significant setback for the poker community in Thailand, especially as the country was beginning to make its mark on the global poker tournament scene.

Historical Opposition and Legal Enforcement Against Gambling

Anutin’s stance is consistent with his longstanding opposition to gambling, which he views as a source of social problems. His decision to ban poker aligns with his previous position as interior minister, where he had expressed disapproval of the activity.

With his current authority, Anutin is actively implementing policies to combat gambling. Authorities have intensified efforts against illegal gambling operations, including recent arrests of individuals involved in unauthorized gambling promotions and betting activities.
