Thailand’s Firm Position Against Casinos
During a recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul made it clear that his government opposes the legalization of casinos in Thailand and intends to put such efforts on hold indefinitely.
Thailand’s Economic Vision and Regional Relations
Prime Minister Anutin, fresh from engaging in high-level discussions at the ASEAN Summit and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, expressed confidence that these diplomatic efforts will bolster Thailand’s economy and improve the livelihoods of its citizens.
Despite these positive economic prospects, Anutin reaffirmed his government’s strict stance against casinos during conversations with President Xi. The decision is influenced by economic and political factors, including concerns from China, Thailand’s largest trading partner, about the impact casino legalization might have on established gambling hubs like Macau. China restricts legal gambling operations exclusively to Macau, one of its two Special Administrative Regions.
The Impact of Tourism and Bilateral Ties
Thailand, with a population of roughly 72 million, is a significant source of tourists for China, with many traveling regularly to Macau, a premier casino destination in Asia. The close proximity between Bangkok and Macau facilitates frequent travel, reinforcing the economic interconnection that influences Thailand’s gambling policies.
Political Changes Influence Thailand’s Gambling Policies
Since assuming office in early September, Prime Minister Anutin has consistently opposed casino legalization, a shift from previous proposals. The former Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, had advocated for establishing up to five casinos across major cities including Bangkok, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. However, following her departure amid political controversy, Anutin’s administration has shelved these plans.

Anutin emphasized alternative approaches to bolster Thailand’s economy by capitalizing on the talents of its people and promoting Thai products and technology. This strategy aims to strengthen economic growth without expanding the gambling industry, aligning with regional partnerships and long-term national interests.
