Background of the Worker Rights Complaint

The Swedish National Contact Point (NCP) for Responsible Business Conduct has issued its concluding statement regarding a labor dispute involving Evolution AB, a leading company in the live gaming industry. The complaint originated from the Social Justice Center based in Tbilisi, representing the Evo-Union trade union. It raised serious concerns about working conditions, compensation, and union rights at Evolution’s Georgian operations.

Strike at Evolution’s Tbilisi Office Triggers International Labor Review

The conflict began in July 2024 when employees at Evolution’s Tbilisi branch initiated a strike, citing inadequate wages, unsafe and unsanitary working environments, and unfair management practices. Attempts to resolve the issues locally had failed, prompting the Social Justice Center to escalate the matter to Sweden’s NCP in August 2024.

The complaint centered on allegations that Evolution AB did not comply with the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, which emphasize fair pay, safe workplaces, and respect for workers’ rights to form unions and engage in collective bargaining.

A key challenge during the resolution process was Evolution AB’s refusal to engage in dialogue with the NCP. While the union representatives were open to discussions, Evolution expressed skepticism about the potential effectiveness of such talks. As a result, the NCP conducted its review independently without direct negotiation between the parties.

Evolution AB’s Response and NCP’s Recommendations

Evolution AB, which employs over 22,000 people globally, defended its pay structures as competitive and exceeding local standards. The company also highlighted its modern facilities, including good air quality, scheduled breaks, and recreational areas designed to enhance employee welfare.

Nonetheless, the NCP received conflicting accounts from workers and Georgian officials around concerns such as workplace safety, suppression of union activities, and broader labor rights violations. Reports even indicated altercations between striking employees and security personnel, leading the NCP to condemn violence from any party involved.

While the NCP did not issue any legal rulings, it urged Evolution AB to reopen dialogue with union leaders and strengthen its adherence to international labor standards. The NCP also called on the company to facilitate union organizing efforts within the workplace. A follow-up review is planned in one year to monitor progress. The NCP reiterated its willingness to assist in fostering meaningful discussions if both sides consent.
