A Store Clerk Survives a Robbery Injury in Philadelphia

In Philadelphia’s Frankford neighborhood, a 27-year-old store clerk named Ahmedein Maham was seriously injured during a late-night armed robbery at the Bridge Market. The assailants targeted the cash stored at the location, which was linked to payouts for the skill game machines operating at the store.

Robbery Prompted by Cash from Skill Game Machines

The incident occurred on September 14, 2024, when two armed thieves invaded the store looking specifically for the cash reserve kept on-site to cover player winnings for the skill game machines. During the attack, Maham was shot in the face but survived the ordeal. He is currently recovering but faces trauma and concern about returning to the city.

Legal Action Against Skill Games Manufacturer

Maham has since initiated a lawsuit against Banilla Games, the company responsible for supplying the skill game machines in Bridge Market. The claim highlights the dangers posed by such machines, which require stores to hold large amounts of cash, thereby increasing risks for employees.

Concerns Over Unregulated Skill Game Machines and Crime

The lawsuit emphasizes that these gray-market gaming machines lack proper regulation, leading to insufficient oversight and a higher likelihood of criminal activity. It points out that Banilla Games’ devices do not automatically pay out winnings, leaving employees to handle cash transactions, which exposes them to harm.

Risks to Employees and Communities

Attorney Robert Zimmerman, representing the victim, remarked that these machines have contributed to serious harm and even fatalities among low-wage workers. He further underscored the broader impact on community safety, contrasting this with the stronger security measures found in regulated casinos.

Zimmerman also asserted that the robbers targeted Bridge Market due to the known presence of significant cash reserves and inadequate safety protocols. This lawsuit is part of a growing awareness surrounding dangers faced by workers in establishments featuring skill games, with some previous incidents resulting in fatalities.
