Extension of Suspension by NSW Independent Casino Commission

The NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has prolonged the suspension of Star Sydney’s gaming floor license for an additional six months. This decision follows a thorough review of the casino’s operations and extends the current restrictions on its gaming activities.

Continued Operational Restrictions

Star Sydney had hoped to renew its gaming license this year, but the NICC has determined that the casino must continue under regulatory supervision. The license suspension will remain until March 1, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance and improvement within the establishment.

The commission has also requested authorization from the Minister to extend the appointment of Mr. Weeks as the Manager of Star Sydney until March 31, 2026, or until the NICC decides otherwise.

History of Regulatory Challenges

Star Sydney’s troubles with regulators began with the Bell Inquiry, which uncovered serious issues at the casino, including its involvement in money laundering facilitated by influential Asian junket operators. The investigation revealed that the casino had not implemented adequate procedures to prevent such illegal activities.

A follow-up review in 2024 confirmed that the casino still needed significant improvements in its compliance frameworks and internal reforms to meet regulatory standards.

Commitment from New Management

The NICC criticized the previous leadership for taking a confrontational stance rather than focusing on meaningful reform. The current management, led by Steve McCann, who has experience with Crown Resorts, is focused on rebuilding trust and working cooperatively with the regulator.

McCann stated that although there is still much to be done, the team is dedicated to executing a comprehensive Remediation Plan. This plan aims to ensure safe and compliant operations and maintain transparent communication with the NICC and the New South Wales Government. The management is committed to demonstrating its suitability as a license holder as soon as possible, working diligently over the next six months to prepare for the casino’s reopening.
