Sphere Entertainment Sets Foot in the Middle East

Sphere Entertainment has reached a significant agreement to introduce its renowned venue concept to the Middle East, marking an expansion beyond its Las Vegas origins. This deal, finalized on July 25 between Sphere Entertainment Group and Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT), plans for the construction and long-term operation of Sphere Abu Dhabi.

Major Financial Support from Abu Dhabi’s DCT

The upcoming venue in Abu Dhabi will mirror the grandeur and capacity of the original Las Vegas Sphere, a 20,000-seat venue launched in 2023. As part of the arrangement detailed in a recent SEC filing, DCT has secured exclusive rights to develop additional Sphere locations throughout the Middle East and North Africa for ten years following the Abu Dhabi launch.

This collaboration reflects Sphere’s shift to a franchise business model, where regional partners finance and manage local sites under a licensing agreement that includes Sphere’s immersive technology, content, and brand. Abu Dhabi’s DCT will fully finance the construction cost and pay ongoing royalties related to ticket sales, intellectual property, and support services before opening.

Strategic Partnership Details and Financial Considerations

DCT has agreed to pay Sphere Entertainment Group a franchise initiation fee as well as royalties for the use of its intellectual property, strengthening the financial foundation of this partnership.

For Sphere Entertainment, expanding beyond Las Vegas is critical for sustainability. Despite numerous successful performances and positive visitor feedback, the $2.3 billion Las Vegas Sphere reported an operating loss of $108 million in Q4 2024. CEO James Dolan has emphasized the necessity of duplicating the Sphere model in new markets to secure long-term profitability.

Future Expansion Prospects for Sphere

The latest 25-year partnership agreement includes options for two additional 10-year extensions and equips DCT with all necessary elements to authentically replicate the Sphere experience. This expansion comes after Sphere’s London project was halted due to regulatory challenges and local opposition. Nonetheless, global expansion continues to be a goal, likely featuring smaller venues with about 5,000 seats to allow more flexibility.

Sphere Entertainment recently reincorporated in Nevada, signaling a stronger connection to the state. Formerly based legally in Delaware, the company found limited strategic benefit there. With approximately 90% of Sphere’s properties and assets located in Nevada, the state offers a more stable and business-friendly environment conducive to long-term growth.

Abu Dhabi’s Role in Sphere’s Global Vision

As Sphere Abu Dhabi becomes the flagship project for global expansion, the partnership will keep the UAE capital at the forefront of entertainment innovation, blending live performance, cinema, art, and cutting-edge technology in one groundbreaking venue. Although construction schedules have not yet been revealed, it is evident that Sphere’s international growth journey is just beginning.
