Massive $1.4 Billion Illegal Gambling Network Dismantled in South Korea

South Korea Disrupts Major Illegal Gambling Operation
Authorities in South Korea have successfully taken down one of the largest illegal gambling rings in recent history. The Busan Metropolitan Police Agency (BMPA) announced a significant bust that targeted this expansive criminal enterprise.
Details of the Bust and Arrests
The crackdown led to the arrest of 23 individuals connected to the operation. Among those detained is the mastermind behind the ring, referred to only as “Mr. A.” Interestingly, officials revealed that Mr. A was a medalist in the Asian Games but withheld further personal details to maintain privacy.
Scope and Operation of the Gambling Ring
The illicit gambling organization operated from April 2022 until September 2025, generating an estimated $1.4 billion. It was based in Busan and functioned much like a corporate entity with structured management. Rather than accepting bets directly, the group placed wagers on illegal online gambling sites on behalf of clients who sought anonymity through proxies.
The operation was highly sophisticated in evading detection. It utilized multiple internet protocols and strategically spread bets across various outcomes to improve clients’ chances of winning. Through this, the criminal ring earned approximately $2.4 million for itself.
To further avoid law enforcement, the group rented eight office-hotel spaces and frequently relocated its operations to complicate tracking efforts by the authorities.
Efforts to Apprehend Other Suspects
This strategy worked for a time, as the ring remained hidden until law enforcement received a tip about the large-scale gambling activities taking place at these venues. Subsequent investigations and raids resulted in the current arrests. However, police continue to pursue one of the key suspects who is believed to have fled to the Philippines.
Officials have requested an Interpol red notice for this individual, as well as for others involved in running the illegal gambling platforms.
