Introduction to Sir Philip Davies’ New Role

The Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) has recently announced the appointment of Sir Philip Davies, a former Member of Parliament, as its new chairperson. With extensive leadership experience, Davies is expected to steer the greyhound racing sport toward a promising future.

A Dedicated Advocate for Greyhound Racing

The GBGB praised Davies for his strong support and understanding of greyhound racing, emphasizing his commitment to the sport’s long-term success. His background and skills are seen as valuable assets in navigating the sector’s challenges.

Davies represented Shipley in West Yorkshire as an MP for nearly twenty years. During his tenure, he was actively involved with the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee and served on the Panel of Chairs.

In 2024, after stepping down from Parliament, Davies took on the role of chairman at Star Sports Group, which he continues to hold. As he assumes the chairmanship at GBGB, he succeeds Jeremy Cooper.

Transition and Vision for Greyhound Racing

Jeremy Cooper, the outgoing chair, reflected on his seven years at GBGB with gratitude, highlighting the collective efforts of the greyhound community in raising industry standards and focusing on the welfare of the animals.

Cooper expressed confidence in Davies’ leadership capabilities, anticipating that the organisation will be well-guided under his chairmanship.

Sir Philip Davies expressed his enthusiasm for joining the GBGB. Having loved greyhound racing since childhood, he recognizes the sport as a cherished part of British culture and is eager to promote its appeal to a wider audience.

He stated that the sport holds a bright future and is committed to collaborating with all stakeholders—including tracks, owners, and trainers—to ensure its ongoing success and animal welfare.

Davies also acknowledged the significant contributions of his predecessor and expressed appreciation for the support within the GBGB.

Leadership Support and Board Developments

The GBGB confirmed that Mark Bird has been reappointed as CEO for another two years. Initially considering departure, Bird chose to remain in his role to support Davies. His experience and respect within the betting industry were noted as valuable to the organisation.

Recently, the board expanded with the addition of Tony Brealey as owner practitioner director, along with new members Dave Baldwin, Katie Bennison, and Kim Sanzone.

Challenges Facing Greyhound Racing in Wales

Sir Philip Davies’ appointment coincides with a challenging period for the sport amid growing criticism over animal welfare concerns. Greyhound racing in Wales is under threat due to a recent move by Welsh lawmakers to ban the sport—a decision strongly opposed by the GBGB.

GBGB CEO Mark Bird emphasized that proper regulation is the best approach to safeguarding the welfare of racing greyhounds, as well as maintaining the sport’s integrity and future prosperity.
