Gambling Machines on Military Bases

The US Military operates a significant number of slot machines, with over 1,800 gambling devices installed across its various bases worldwide. This widespread availability raises concerns about its effects on military personnel.

Concerns Over Gambling Effects on Service Members

Exposure to these gambling opportunities has led to noticeable issues among military members, including addiction and other related harms. Experts have also raised questions about how gambling problems might affect the readiness and performance of soldiers.

Senate Approves Funding to Explore Gambling-Related Issues in the Military

Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the Senate Appropriations Committee has included new funding in the FY2026 Defense Appropriations Bill. This funding is dedicated to researching gambling addiction specifically within the military community to better understand its impact on service members.

Support from National Council on Problem Gambling

The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), a leading advocate for those affected by gambling issues, has praised this initiative. Veterans, in particular, are acknowledged as being highly vulnerable to the severe consequences of gambling addiction.

Derek Longmeier, President of the NCPG Board of Directors, emphasized the importance of this funding, stating that it will empower researchers and medical professionals within the VA and military health systems to address gambling addiction more effectively.

Prevalence of Gambling Problems Among Military Personnel

Estimates from the Department of Defense’s 2022 Health Related Behaviors Survey indicate that approximately 1.6% of active-duty members and 1.7% of reservists experience gambling problems. However, these figures might underrepresent the true scope, as rates tend to be higher in the general population.

Challenges in Addressing Gambling Addiction in the Military

Despite these concerns, funding to combat gambling addiction within the military has been lacking until now. Continuous access to gambling venues on bases makes it difficult for affected individuals to avoid temptation and seek help.

This newly allocated funding marks a critical move toward understanding and mitigating the negative impacts of gambling on those who serve, aiming to ensure their health and operational readiness are protected.
