Semiahmoo First Nation to Acquire Elements Casino Surrey

Great Canadian Entertainment has reached a definitive agreement to sell Elements Casino Surrey to the economic development division of the Semiahmoo First Nation, known as SE-MI-AH-MU Development Corporation.

Pending Approvals and Support Transition

The sale is subject to usual regulatory clearances and closing conditions, including formal approval from the City of Surrey, which holds ownership of the casino property. Great Canadian Entertainment has committed to providing transition assistance to SE-MI-AH-MU for up to one year following the completion of the sale to ensure a smooth handover.

Significance of the Agreement

Matt Anfinson, CEO of Great Canadian Entertainment, highlighted that this transaction represents the company’s eighth successful collaboration involving British Columbia First Nations to transfer ownership of its regional casino operations.

He expressed enthusiasm about the Semiahmoo First Nation entering the provincial casino industry and emphasized the company’s focus on working closely with SE-MI-AH-MU and the casino staff during the transition to promote continued success.

Community Benefits for Semiahmoo First Nation

Chief Harley Chappell of the Semiahmoo First Nation emphasized the acquisition’s positive impact, noting it will create stronger economic prospects for the Nation’s people and reinforce their connection to their traditional lands.

He also spoke about the commitment to generate meaningful employment opportunities, foster regional growth, and boost the overall prosperity of the community.

Legal Support and Past Property Transactions

Legal advisory services for the deal are provided by McMillan for Great Canadian and Munnings Law for SE-MI-AH-MU.

Earlier, Great Canadian announced the sale of several other properties including Casino Vancouver to PDG, a corporation owned by the Snuneymuxw First Nation. The same corporation acquired Casino Nanaimo, Elements Casino Victoria, River Rock Casino Resort, and Chances Maple Ridge from Great Canadian.

Additionally, Elements Casino Chilliwack was obtained by Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe Management Ltd, and Hastings Casino in Vancouver was transferred to the Tsleil-Waututh Nation.

Financial Outcomes of Recent Sales

Media reports suggest Great Canadian Entertainment generated between $650 million and $675 million from these sales. The company used these funds to reduce debt following a $3.3 billion acquisition by a New York-based private equity firm in 2021.

This strategic move was designed to create favorable conditions for investors to achieve returns on their investments.
