Russian Orthodox Church Takes a Stand Against Online Gambling Legalization

The Russian Orthodox Church has expressed strong opposition to a recent initiative aimed at legalizing online gambling in territories of Ukraine currently occupied by Russia. The church, known for its complex and sometimes controversial history, has positioned itself on moral grounds in response to this legislative proposal.

Proposal by Russian Finance Minister

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov put forward a plan to legalize online gambling as a way to generate additional revenue for Russia’s economy, which has been strained by ongoing conflict and economic sanctions. The minister estimates that the new policy could bring in about $1.3 billion annually, bolstering government funds during a challenging financial period.

Church Voices Concerns About Social Impact

However, this proposal has faced significant criticism from Vakhtang Kipshidze, Deputy Head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Synodal Department for Relations with Society and the Media. Kipshidze warned that legalizing online gambling could worsen social problems, especially by increasing cases of gambling addiction and financial hardship within families.

He also emphasized that the government should prioritize combating illegal gambling, which is already a widespread issue in Russia, rather than promoting legalized gambling.

Defense of Traditional Values

The church underscored the importance of preserving traditional values, a key cultural principle emphasized in Russia’s broader campaign against Western influence. Upholding these values, the clergy argue, conflicts with efforts to promote gambling within society.

Ukraine’s Response to Online Gambling Concerns

Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities remain wary of online casinos operating within the country, many of which are suspected of having ties to Russia. These platforms are believed to indirectly support Russia’s military activities. In response, Ukraine has launched sweeping reforms aimed at restricting the spread of such gambling websites and reducing their influence.
