Romanian Gambling Regulator Cracks Down on Illegal Websites

Regulator Blocks Two Unlawful Gambling Websites
The Romanian gambling authority, known as ONJN, has taken decisive action by ordering the closure of two unidentified gambling websites. This move is part of the regulator’s ongoing effort to curb offshore gambling operations that are not authorized to operate within the country.
Legal Action and Monitoring Measures
Following the blocking order, ONJN has escalated enforcement by filing criminal charges against the operators of these sites. The regulator is also pursuing accountability for those who profit from illegal advertising associated with these platforms.
ONJN emphasized the importance of continuous oversight of all entities connected to gambling activities, including payment processors and software providers. According to the regulator, any service providers supporting illegal operations are committing offenses and will be prohibited from conducting business in the Romanian market.
Zero Tolerance for Local Collaboration and Influencer Involvement
The regulator recently announced it will not tolerate cooperation with illegal gambling websites by local partners. Influencers promoting unauthorized gambling services risk being held accountable and may face investigations if they assist illegal operations, such as by sharing promotional content or referral links.
Similar enforcement steps have been taken in other countries, such as Sweden, where influencer involvement in illegal gambling has been scrutinized. In the past five months, ONJN has successfully blocked 93 unauthorized gambling websites and continues to work on identifying further violations.
