Rising Gambling Addiction Concerns in Iceland

Growing Gambling Addiction in Iceland
Iceland is facing a troubling rise in gambling addiction, with estimates indicating that at least 1% of its population is severely affected by gambling disorders. This issue likely represents only a portion of the actual scope of the problem.
Impact of Online Gambling
An additional 2% to 3% of Icelanders struggle with various levels of problematic gambling behaviors. A key factor often identified in the increase of reckless gambling is the growth of online gambling platforms. Research shows that nine out of ten individuals experiencing gambling problems began or saw their issues worsen after engaging in online gambling, which has led to increased spending and difficulties with controlling impulses.
Challenges in Enforcement and Regulation
Although gambling was banned in Iceland in 2005, many international operators continue to offer gambling services within the country without facing effective legal restrictions. There is no dedicated enforcement agency actively regulating or removing these illegal operators, which exacerbates the issue. According to Professor Daníel Þór Ólason from the University of Iceland, between four and seven thousand Icelanders currently experience serious gambling problems.
Calls for Enhanced Treatment and Policy Reform
Professor Þór Ólason emphasizes that the problem is not only due to the widespread availability of online gambling but also because of insufficient treatment and preventive measures. Currently, there is no specialized unit within Iceland’s health directorate focused on gambling addiction prevention, which hampers effective response efforts. Although some services have expanded, such as those provided by SÁÁ, more comprehensive treatment options are required.
He advocates for the Icelandic government to develop a new regulatory framework prioritizing the protection of vulnerable individuals and improving support systems for those affected by gambling addiction.
