Growing Concerns Over Sports Integrity Linked to Gambling

Trust in the fairness of American sports is declining, with increasing suspicion tied to the expanding presence of sports betting. A recent nationwide survey conducted by Ipsos reveals that fans have become more doubtful about the honesty of sporting events in the past two years, even as sports betting continues to gain popularity. Many Americans feel that broadcasts are putting too much emphasis on gambling, overshadowing the actual sports.

Majority Support Stronger Regulations on Sports Betting

The Ipsos survey, conducted in early November 2025, found that 49% of Americans now believe that sports betting harms the integrity of sports. This percentage has risen significantly from 41% in 2024 and 37% in 2023. Among dedicated sports fans, 55% agree that betting undermines the credibility of the games they follow. The frequent presence of betting odds and promotions during live games seems to be contributing to this growing frustration.

Alarmingly, nearly half of those surveyed expressed worry that gambling has led to manipulation of game outcomes. Specifically, 47% of the general public and 51% of sports fans suspect that some sporting events might be rigged due to gambling interests. Older generations tend to be more distrustful, while those under 50 show comparatively less skepticism.

The rising unease is prompting calls for tougher oversight. Almost three times as many Americans support increased regulation by individual sports leagues compared to those who oppose it. This indicates that many believe the leagues themselves should take responsibility for safeguarding competition integrity. There is also notable support for increased federal regulation, although to a slightly lesser extent.

Sports Betting Participation Continues to Climb Despite Concerns

One of the most debated topics is the advertising of sports betting. About half of Americans are in favor of banning betting ads during live sports broadcasts, with older individuals showing stronger support for such restrictions. While fewer people support a nationwide ban on betting ads, more respondents still favor tighter controls than oppose them. Sports fans generally do not reject regulated betting outright but call for stricter oversight.

Despite the growing worries, participation in sports betting has nearly doubled compared to the previous year. Currently, 17% of Americans report having placed a wager on a live sporting event. Both online and in-person betting have seen steady increases, with young men making up the most active group. Increased exposure and accessibility to betting opportunities appear to be advancing faster than people’s comfort with them, creating ongoing tensions.

High-profile scandals have only intensified public concern. Investigations into gambling-related violations in major leagues such as the NBA, MLB, and NCAA have highlighted how betting incentives might distort fair competition. In response, these leagues have started to strengthen their regulations on wagering activities and enforce new restrictions on sportsbooks with the aim of rebuilding fan trust while preserving profitable partnerships.
