Rio Hotel and Casino Employees Secure Improved Contract with Teamsters

Agreement Reached to Prevent Strike
The dedicated employees of Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas have achieved a significant milestone after ratifying a new agreement with the Teamsters Union. This development has ensured enhanced working conditions for the staff and successfully avoided a potential strike at the property.
Long-Standing Negotiations Finally Yield Results
Negotiations between the casino workers and management had been ongoing for nearly two years, leaving employees uncertain about their futures and pushing them to consider striking. The workers had formally authorized a strike as a last resort during the deadlock.
Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of the Teamsters Local 986, which represents the casino’s employees, a four-year contract agreement has now been finalized with the casino’s management team.
Key Terms of the New Contract
The agreement includes a substantial 15% wage increase along with improved vacation benefits. Workers will also continue to receive health coverage through the Teamsters Health and Welfare Plan. Additionally, the 62 casino employees have secured job protections against automation and technology impacts, and gained access to the Teamsters 401(k) retirement plan.
Workers Celebrate Their Success
The casino’s staff expressed satisfaction with the contract outcome. Malinda Zarcone, a front desk employee, mentioned that the primary goal was to secure fair terms that provide peace of mind on the job. She noted that while a strike was never the preferred path, employees were prepared to take action if necessary to protect their rights.
Union Leaders Praise the Outcome
Teamsters Local 986 president Tim Vera commended the union members for their resilience and for compelling management to listen. He emphasized that the victory is a testament to the collective strength of the workers who stood firm on their demands.
Tommy Blitsch, director of the Teamsters Convention, Trade Show, and Casino Division, reinforced that the union will steadfastly defend its members against any form of disrespect or unfair treatment.
