CEO John O’Reilly to Step Down but Remain During Transition

Rank Group is entering a new phase as its CEO, John O’Reilly, announces he will leave his position by the end of January. Having led the company through a critical period of recovery and growth, O’Reilly’s leadership helped stabilize Rank Group and set it on a path of renewed momentum.

Although O’Reilly will resign as CEO effective January 29, he will continue supporting the company until the conclusion of the 2025/26 financial year to ensure a smooth handover. Richard Harris, the current Chief Financial Officer, will temporarily assume the CEO role from January 30. The board has already started the search for a permanent CEO, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strategic focus and continuity.

Interim CEO Richard Harris Brings Key Financial Expertise

Richard Harris joined Rank Group as CFO in 2022, bringing extensive experience from his prior roles at companies such as Foxtons Group, Laird Plc, and Marks and Spencer Plc. As an executive director, he has been part of crucial financial decisions at Rank, positioning him well to guide the company during this interim period as the board conducts its search for a new leader.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead for Rank Group

John H. Ott, the board chair, expressed appreciation for O’Reilly’s nearly eight-year tenure, highlighting his significant influence on the company’s strategy and stability. O’Reilly’s leadership was pivotal in navigating regulatory challenges and evolving consumer behavior while also contributing to conversations about responsible gambling during a time of industry uncertainty.

Recent leadership changes on the board include Ott replacing former chair Alex Thursby late last year, bringing strategic depth at a critical juncture for the business. Despite recent improvements in trading performance, Rank Group faces ongoing pressures from increased gambling taxes in the UK, which impact profitability and require a careful reassessment of business strategies moving forward.

As Rank Group evolves under new leadership, the coming months will be crucial in testing the resilience of the foundation established over the past years and in steering the company through a challenging landscape.
