Philippines Launches Investigation into the Negative Effects of Online Gambling

Concerns Surrounding Online Gambling in the Philippines
Lawmakers in the Philippines are currently debating the future of online gambling as concerns grow over its adverse effects on society. The Senate Committee on Games and Amusement has initiated an investigation to evaluate the negative consequences of the industry, which could influence the fate of several legislative proposals aimed at regulating or banning online gambling.
The Challenges Facing Philippine Online Gambling
The country has long dealt with issues related to online gambling, including social problems and crime linked to the digital betting sector. These problems led to the discontinuation of the Philippine Offshore Gambling Operator (POGO) system, which had operated for about twenty years. However, completely shutting down all POGO operations proved difficult, as some operators continued to offer their services despite the ban.
Meanwhile, online gambling continued to expand throughout the Philippines, causing increasing concern among lawmakers. Many believe that only a full prohibition of online gambling can effectively protect the population, although no official decision has been made yet. The possibility of instituting a ban remains a prominent consideration.
Official Inquiry into the Impact of iGaming
The Senate Committee on Games and Amusement has formally announced an inquiry intended to thoroughly assess the effects of online gambling. Senator Ewin Tulfo has highlighted the urgency of this issue, describing the state of iGaming as a crisis that demands strict regulatory attention. The committee will review various pending bills that propose stringent regulations or full prohibition of the sector.
Senator Tulfo stressed that safeguarding the well-being of the nation’s youth should take precedence over the economic benefits derived by gambling operators. This sentiment reflects a growing priority to address the social impacts above all else.
Additionally, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who has previously been hesitant to take a clear stance on the matter, has agreed to consult with different groups, including religious organizations such as the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, indicating a more collaborative approach to finding solutions.
Efforts Towards Safer Gambling Practices
In response to increasing pressure and the ongoing debate, nineteen licensed online gambling companies have united to establish the PlaySafe Alliance. This group aims to promote safer gambling practices and combat illegal gambling activities across the country, demonstrating the industry’s recognition of the need for improved safety measures.
