Phil Hellmuth Advocates Capping WSOP Bracelets to Preserve Prestige

Phil Hellmuth’s Proposal on WSOP Bracelets
Phil Hellmuth, who holds the record for the most World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets at 17, has voiced his opinion that the annual number of bracelets awarded should be limited. In a recent interview, Hellmuth emphasized the importance of keeping this prestigious accolade meaningful.
Concerns About Bracelet Inflation
Hellmuth expressed his concern that with over 300 bracelets currently awarded each year, the value and exclusivity of earning a WSOP bracelet are diminishing. He suggested imposing a cap of 100 bracelets per year to maintain their significance. Hellmuth acknowledged that WSOP organizers might prefer awarding more than 100 bracelets, but he remains firm in his stance.
Hellmuth’s WSOP Journey
Phil Hellmuth’s WSOP journey began with his first bracelet win in 1989 during the Main Event. Most recently, in 2023, he secured a bracelet in the $10,000 Super Turbo Bounty No-Limit Hold’em event. His nearest competitor in terms of bracelet count is Phil Ivey, with 11 bracelets.
Insights Shared on Podcasts and Private Discussions
Hellmuth revealed on the 3Cem 3ENo Gamble, No Future 3C/em 3E podcast that he had private conversations with GGPoker and Daniel Negreanu regarding plans to reduce the number of bracelets awarded each year. He shared concerns that without such measures, the WSOP brand would suffer by diluting the bracelets’ prestige.
Following GGPoker’s acquisition of the WSOP in 2024 through a $500 million deal, discussions about limiting bracelet numbers have intensified. Hellmuth quoted himself encouraging a revival of the WSOP’s prestige, stating, “I’m not a political guy, but I’m going to say, make the World Series of Poker great again.” He also disclosed that Negreanu advocates for capping the bracelets at 150 per year. Hellmuth went as far as to state that if the number is not reduced, he might stop participating in those events altogether.
Separate Recognition for Online WSOP Bracelets
Hellmuth believes that bracelets won in online WSOP events should be categorized separately from those won in live events. He admitted that he does not personally know any online WSOP bracelet winners, reflecting his perspective on the distinction between online and live competitions.
Maintaining Exclusivity and Prestige
The maximum number of WSOP bracelets awarded at live events in Las Vegas is 100. However, when including live events held internationally and online tournaments, the total number of bracelets awarded each year can significantly exceed this figure. In 2024, for example, 234 bracelets were awarded across all WSOP events worldwide.
Hellmuth argues that the World Series of Poker must preserve a sense of exclusivity. He believes that awarding too many bracelets diminishes the honor associated with winning one, making the achievement less special for players and fans alike.
