The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) has introduced a campaign aimed at increasing public knowledge about the growing issue of underage gambling. This problem is becoming more significant not only in Pennsylvania but across the United States.

Named “What’s Really at Stake,” the campaign features a dedicated website filled with educational resources and materials designed to dispel common misconceptions about youth gambling risks. The launch of this initiative aligns with Problem Gambling Awareness Month in March as well as the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.

Rising Concerns Over Youth Gambling Habits

Giving lottery tickets to minors has sparked regulatory concerns beyond Pennsylvania’s borders. Recent data highlighted by the PGCB reveals that 58% of 18 to 22-year-olds participate in sports betting, with 6% reporting losses exceeding $500 in a single day. According to a survey from College Gambling, about 75% of college students have engaged in both legal and illegal gambling over the past year.

PGCB’s Stance on Regulating Age and Access

Kevin O’Toole, Executive Director of the PGCB, emphasized the importance of this campaign as a step toward safer gambling practices. He stated that all legally regulated gambling activities in Pennsylvania are strictly for individuals aged 21 and older. While licensed operators have measures in place to prevent underage participation, the availability of illegal and unregulated gambling sites that lack such protections contributes significantly to underage gambling problems.

Support and Resources for Young People and Their Networks

The PGCB’s campaign also targets family members and friends of young people who might be affected by gambling harm. Josh Ercole, Executive Director of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of Pennsylvania, noted an increase in young individuals reaching out for assistance. He stressed the importance of open conversations around gambling risks, especially given the widespread availability of unregulated gambling options.
