Partnership to Reinforce Data Protection in Gaming

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) has partnered with the National Privacy Commission (NPC) to address data privacy challenges within the gaming sector. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to enhance data protection practices for the industry.

Strengthening Policies Aligned with Data Privacy Standards

The MoU was officially signed at PAGCOR’s Corporate Office in Pasay City on October 20. This agreement unites PAGCOR and NPC in their mission to solve various data privacy and compliance issues affecting the Philippine gaming industry. Together, they intend to foster cooperation among stakeholders and build a trusted environment for both gaming employees and players regarding their personal information.

PAGCOR’s Chair and CEO, Alejandro H. Tengco, highlighted this partnership as a crucial measure for safeguarding personal data of employees, licensees, and participants within the gaming sector. He remarked that the MoU represents a significant stride towards ensuring transparency, compliance, and trustworthiness in all operations related to data privacy.

Moreover, this collaboration serves as a foundational step toward developing a register of banned players, which will list individuals, including some government officials, who are prohibited from gambling activities.

Promoting Excellence Through Data Privacy Initiatives

The idea of this partnership emerged during a Data Privacy Training Workshop led by the NPC for Government-Owned and Controlled Corporations. The initiative was suggested by PAGCOR’s data privacy officer, Maria Concepcion Gloria-Rubio, who advocated for a dedicated framework to strengthen the Philippines’ compliance with data privacy standards.

John Henry Naga, NPC’s privacy commissioner and chair, welcomed PAGCOR’s proactive approach to data privacy accountability. He emphasized that increased collaboration between these regulatory bodies would enhance the oversight of personal data protection, particularly in sectors that manage large amounts of sensitive information.

Looking ahead, PAGCOR plans to launch various joint activities with the NPC aimed at raising awareness about data privacy and promoting policies that improve privacy governance within the gaming industry.
