New Socio-Civic Center Opens in Laurel, Batangas

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) recently inaugurated a new socio-civic center located in Laurel, Batangas. This initiative comes in response to the increasing activity of Taal Volcano, providing much-needed support to nearby communities.

PAGCOR’s 50th Socio-Civic Facility

Close to the volcano’s vicinity, this establishment marks PAGCOR’s 50th socio-civic center. Its primary function is to serve as a safe evacuation point during emergencies. Beyond disaster readiness, the two-story facility is designed to host various community events and social gatherings.

The project, which cost approximately PHP 50 million (around $850,000), is equipped with essential features such as kitchens, restrooms, and versatile halls, all constructed with disaster resilience in mind. PAGCOR has structured this center to be practical both during crises and for everyday community use.

This new center reflects PAGCOR’s dedication to safeguarding Filipino communities, particularly those at risk from natural disasters. In addition to this center, there are 22 more socio-civic centers currently under development as part of PAGCOR’s effort to invest gaming revenues into community welfare projects.

Community Cooperation Key to Disaster Preparedness, Says Laurel Mayor

Eric Balcos, Assistant Vice President of PAGCOR’s Community Relations and Services Department, reiterated the agency’s commitment to utilizing gaming funds for enhancing protection and support for vulnerable areas. He emphasized that the centers are established to provide safety, comfort, and dignity to the Filipino people.

Lyndon M. Bruce, Mayor of Laurel, expressed strong appreciation for the new socio-civic center, highlighting it as a product of the collaborative efforts between PAGCOR, local authorities, and the residents. The mayor affirmed his belief that collective teamwork is essential in overcoming disaster challenges.

The Municipality of Laurel is recognized as one of the most at-risk localities in the Philippines, primarily due to its proximity to Taal Volcano, which frequently necessitates community evacuations.
