Security Guard Detained Then Freed Amid Murder Investigation

Ray Gilbert, a 27-year-old who worked as a security guard at an unlicensed gambling operation in Oakland, California, was initially detained after authorities found a firearm in his possession linked to an unresolved homicide. However, following further investigation, law enforcement officials could not establish a definitive connection between him and the crime, leading to his release.

Details of the Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Gilbert was apprehended in July 2023 during a police raid on the illegal gaming venue, along with three other suspects. A few weeks later, investigators searching his residence recovered a gun believed to have been used in the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Mynyamani Stevenson, which occurred in the parking area of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland on July 29, 2023.

Subsequently, federal prosecutors charged Gilbert, accusing him of involvement with a robbery group linked to the Case Gang operating in Oakland. Legal documents describe the group targeting victims, including one individual robbed after winning money at a casino in Livermore.

Gilbert’s defense attorney, Assistant Federal Public Defender Gabriela Bischof, argued that the evidence primarily ties him to certain people and environments viewed negatively but does not prove his personal engagement in violent acts. She maintained that Gilbert should not face punishment solely based on his associations.

After spending approximately two years in custody, Gilbert has since been released and found employment in an East Bay warehouse, marking a positive change in his life, according to court statements from his lawyer.

Background Factors Influencing Gilbert’s Path

Gilbert’s attorney highlighted a difficult upbringing marked by violence. He has survived being shot five times, the first incident happening when he was just 13 years old. Additionally, Gilbert lost his father at the age of 5. In 2021, he was severely bitten by a police K9 under controversial circumstances involving a former Antioch officer who was later convicted and imprisoned for misconduct.

Law enforcement has frequently targeted Gilbert over the years, including wiretapping his communications in 2020 as part of a broader investigation connected to gang-related violence and shootings. Nonetheless, these inquiries did not lead to charges against him.
