New Zealand Grants 15-Year Extension for Queenstown Casino License

License Extension for Queenstown Casino
New Zealand has granted a 15-year extension to the license of SkyCity Entertainment Group’s main casino in Queenstown. This decision comes as New Zealand explores the development of a more flexible gambling regulatory framework, which includes potential changes for online casinos.
Effective Date and Market Context
The new license extension will take effect from December 7, 2025. This update arrives amid ongoing discussions and uncertainty surrounding the establishment of an online gambling (iGaming) framework. Lawmakers remain cautious about how such regulation might affect existing land-based casinos like the Queenstown venue.
SkyCity CEO’s Perspective
Jason Walbridge, CEO of SkyCity, expressed his satisfaction with the decision, stating that the company is eager to continue contributing to Queenstown’s vibrant entertainment scene, serving both local residents and visitors alike.
Proposed Changes to Online Gambling Taxation
At the same time, New Zealand is considering increasing the tax rate on online gambling activities to better support local communities and government programs. The current tax rate of 12% could be raised to 16%, with the additional 4% specifically earmarked for initiatives benefiting community groups, sports clubs, and grassroots organizations.
Brooke van Velden, the Minister of Internal Affairs, emphasized the clear demand from communities that regulatory reforms on online gambling should ensure tangible benefits are returned to local organizations.
SkyCity’s Recent Developments
Besides the Queenstown casino, SkyCity recently acquired the New Zealand International Convention Centre near its Auckland casino. The company operates three casinos in New Zealand, located in Auckland, Queenstown, and Hamilton.
