Long-Term License Renewal for Queenstown Casino

New Zealand has granted a 15-year extension to the operating license of SkyCity Entertainment Group’s premier casino located in Queenstown. This decision comes as the country explores the possibility of updating its gambling regulations to include more liberal policies, particularly concerning online gambling platforms.

Effective Dates and Market Context

The license renewal will be effective starting December 7, 2025. This extension arrives amid ongoing discussions among lawmakers about introducing a regulated online gambling sector. There is cautious consideration on how these changes might affect existing land-based casinos, including the Queenstown venue.

SkyCity’s Response to the License Extension

Jason Walbridge, CEO of SkyCity, expressed satisfaction with the license renewal, emphasizing the company’s commitment to contributing to Queenstown’s vibrant entertainment scene for both residents and visitors alike.

Proposed Changes to Online Gambling Taxation

The government is also contemplating an increase in the tax rate for online gambling operators. The proposed rise from the current 12% to 16% aims to generate additional funds dedicated to supporting local communities and government programs. This effort is designed to ensure that benefits from gambling revenues extend back into grassroots organizations, community groups, and sports clubs.

Internal Affairs Minister Brooke van Velden highlighted the community’s clear expectation that online gambling regulations should result in tangible benefits for local initiatives and organizations.

SkyCity’s Expanding Presence in New Zealand

Alongside the casino license extension, SkyCity has recently acquired the New Zealand International Convention Centre, situated near their SkyCity Auckland casino. The company operates three casinos across New Zealand, including locations in Queenstown, Auckland, and Hamilton.
