The Study and Its Findings

A recent report by a major media outlet identified Nevada as the state with the highest levels of dishonesty in the United States. The study ranked Nevada first for behaviors such as lying, cheating, and forging documents.

With about 70% of Nevada’s 3.27 million population residing in Las Vegas, the city often associated with a culture of secrecy, the report reflects this reputation by highlighting the adage, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”

The survey analyzed various sources, including fraud reports, cases of romance scams, identity theft incidents, fabricated medical notes and identification cards, and data on internet searches related to the controversial extramarital affair website, Ashley Madison.

Data from an online tarot reading platform indicated that Nevada experiences the second-highest rate of romance scams nationwide. According to the findings, roughly one in five residents admit to frequently telling lies.

The Notorious Romance Scam Case

The report highlights a significant criminal case involving a 43-year-old woman named Aurora Phelps, arrested by the FBI last year for an elaborate romance scam operation.

Over a three-year period, Phelps used dating applications to attract men, then incapacitated them to steal their identities and access their bank accounts. She drained funds from her victims, whose average ages ranged between 60 and 70 years old.

Authorities have linked her actions to three deaths, emphasizing the severe consequences of such fraudulent activities.

State Comparisons in Fraud and Scams

While Nevada leads overall in scam prevalence, other states hold top rankings in specific categories. For example, Florida reports the highest rates of fraud, with 2,179 cases per 100,000 people, and also records significant incidents of identity theft at 528 per 100,000 people.

Arizona claims the top spot for romance scams, with reported losses exceeding $53 million in 2024 alone due to love-related fraud schemes.

Despite these specific distinctions, Nevada surpasses these states when considering the total volume of reported scams across all categories.
