Fulfilling one of his key campaign promises, Prime Minister Balendra Shah has ordered a ban on internet gambling sites and apps. This move forms part of his broader effort to enhance governance and tighten regulatory oversight. The responsibility for implementing this directive now lies with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, which will oversee the blocking of gambling operators across the country.

Though gambling activities are already forbidden in Nepal, many offshore operators have continued targeting Nepalese users. The prime minister is determined to redirect resources to stop these overseas entities. This step addresses increasing concerns over the rise of online betting and its potential negative financial and social effects, especially on younger populations.

Rapid Implementation and ISP Responsibilities

To achieve swift results, the prime minister instructed internet service providers to block access to gambling websites within 24 hours. These ISPs are now charged with preventing Nepalese citizens from reaching such sites.
